3,500 Delegates Decide Fate Of 84 PDP Aspirants

ABOUT 3,500 delegates will today in Abuja elect persons to fill 17 vacant positions in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

A total of 88 aspirants were Friday screened by a special screening committee, headed by Senate Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba.

It was learnt that the committee cleared all aspirants to contest the election.

Only the positions of the national chairman and national secretary are not being contested for in Saturday’s exercise.

Chairman of the Publicity Sub-committee and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, said Friday that all arrangements had been made to ensure a successful convention.

“It is expected that voting will start early enough and the convention will end quick. And 146 polling boots have been arranged, meaning that such number of people will vote at a time,” he disclosed.

The atmosphere at the Eagle Square venue was charged already, as hundreds of security men had already taken over the entire Three-Arms-Zone that houses the Presidency, Supreme Court and the National Assembly.

As early as 3.30pm yesterday, roads leading to this zone had been blocked.

The positions being contested today include those of the Deputy National Chairman, Assistant National Secretary, National Publicity Secretary and National Organizing Secretary.

Other positions up for grab are Financial Secretary, Woman Leader, Youth Leader and the office of the National Auditor.

Besides these members of the NWC, their deputies, who are equally national officials, are equally going to be elected.

Ihedioha told newsmen that adequate preparations had been made to ensure a hitch-free congress.

He said: “Voting would be concluded on time, because it commences as soon as the President arrives.

“It is expected to be concluded within three hours, after which sorting would commence.”

Ihedioha said all positions would be voted for to avoid the pitfall of the past, where those who won by affirmation had their election voided by the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC).

While assuring that all party issues would be resolved at today’s convention, the Deputy Speaker added that seasoned administrators and other senior Nigerians, who are founding fathers of the party, would feature prominently in the electoral process.
