The Conference of State Chairmen of Registered Political Parties in the South-South region of the country has called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to end what it described as the reign of impunity over and above the Nigerian Constitution, especially in the political crises rocking Taraba and Rivers states.
In a statement by its Coordinator, Christian Abeh, in Asaba on Tuesday, the group said the President’s continued silence on the unwholesome political developments in both states seemed to have aggravated the situation.
“We call on Mr. President and the NASS to make our constitution to be recognised, because impunity has taken over the day, to the detriment of our constitution. As far as democracy is concerned, that is the problem of this country as of today,” the statement said.
The group said the posture of the President, the NASS and all other lawmakers over the Taraba State issue left a sad note in the development of democracy in Nigeria. It, therefore, reminded the Jonathan that “the days when cabals hold any section or part of the country hostage in the name of leadership or head of government is gone forever.”
Abeh said, “How can a man, who cannot walk or speak properly, declare himself fit to govern a state? Nigerians are wiser now than the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s era. So, let no man deceive us again.”
He wondered why the family and associates of the ailing Taraba State governor would allow the powers-that-be to take lightly the health conditions of “a once highly respected governor Suntai of the most peaceful state in the North and reduce him to a caricature of a governor?”
